Metta: George Saunders on Failures of Kindness

"What I regret most in life are my failures of kindness."
George Saunders.
Woah. How true?
I don't think I've ever regretted being kind and generous. Have you?
I most certainly regret it deeply when I've not been kind. Most cases are when I've been stressed and taken my frustration out on someone else when it wasn't their fault.
Or it's the quieter failure—noticing someone might need a bit of kindness and not stepping in. Just letting it happen.
This week on the mat, we're sitting with metta — loving-kindness, one of the Buddha's Four Immeasurables. The word comes from the Pali mitta, "true friend in need."
Big love, Em x
