David Whyte on Courage: Being Truly Yourself

Line drawing of a figure with the word courage, being true you

Is the most significant test of courage, our ability to truly be ourselves?

David Whyte says: COURAGE is a word that tempts us to think outwardly, to do something under besieging circumstances, and perhaps, above all, to be seen to do it in public.

To be courageous is not necessarily to go anywhere or do anything, except to make conscious those things we already feel deeply and then to live through the unending vulnerabilities of those consequences.

To be courageous is to stay close to the way we are made.

Those words “stay close to the way we are made” resonate with me very deeply. It’s so sad when we drift away from what it feels we are meant to be.

So, if the risk of embarrassment or other people’s expectations weren’t a thing, how might you live life differently?

Big love, Em x
